It's smaller than a penny with spoon-shaped leaves stretching toward the sky, and its existence hasn't been documented in decades. Until now. The California Native Plant Society and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden announced the "re-discovery" of the Santa Ynez groundstar, a rare species of flowering plant native to California with just 180 remaining specimens left. Collaborators from both organizations said they pieced together information from old records to determine where the annual herb may still be living, and determined it could be on Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County.
